Book marks 100 years of the New Zealand Federation of Women’s Institutes

The New Zealand Federation of Women’s Institutes has published a beautifully produced hardcover book called Women, Home & Country as an important way to mark the Federation’s centenary in 2021.

The Federation was founded in 1921 to bring women together to share knowledge, build skills, and strengthen community life. Originally established in rural areas, the organisation created opportunities for connection, education, and support at a time when many women were isolated.

Over the past century, the Federation has grown into a nationwide network, welcoming women from all walks of life. Through local institutes, members have fostered friendships, developed practical and creative skills, contributed to community initiatives, and supported causes both locally and nationally.

The 180-page book offers a rich and visually engaging record of one of Aotearoa’s most influential community organisations. Editor Mary Reet brings together detailed archival material, contemporary photography, and personal reflections to tell the story of the organisation from its rural beginnings in 1921 through to its centenary celebrations.

Mrs Reet says Women, Home & Country records the Federation’s centenary celebrations, rather than providing a detailed history of the movement.

“The book highlights the enduring role that members have played in supporting families, strengthening communities and enriching New Zealand life,” says Mrs Reet.

“The book came out of the Federation’s centenary celebrations in 2021 which were at risk of being derailed by the Covid 19 pandemic. We wanted to reflect our celebrations but also acknowledge the background of the times we were in. We wanted a book that members are proud to own and to promote. We have not had any such publication before, which have been more in-house publications rather than an illustrated book using a publisher.”

Mrs Reet says she drew inspiration from the Federation’s members and encouraged by other members of the committee particularly current President Jude Vaughan.

“It has been a labour of love, somewhat exhausting but I am so proud of the result. The book made me smile as I saw all the ladies having so much fun and enjoyment and I loved the opportunity of showcasing their talents to the country they spend so much time supporting through fund raising and craft work.”

The book documents nationwide centenary events, including commemorations, community projects and creative traditions, while also reflecting the resilience of members navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With strong appeal to members, their families, and readers interested in New Zealand social history, women’s stories, and community life, this is a giftable title with broad national relevance. Ideal for regional stores, museum shops and heritage-focused retailers.

During the 2021 centenary, the Federation commissioned a statue for their founder, Miss Jerome Spencer, which has now been erected in Napier.

With a long-standing commitment to service, learning, and connection, the Federation continues to play an important role in enriching the lives of women and strengthening communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Women, Home & Country is a warm, celebratory and visually rich publication that honours a century of connection, service and community.
