Frequently Asked Questions
We know that publishing a book can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. There’s a lot to wrap your head around, and no two projects are the same. Below, we’ve answered some of the questions we get asked most often, from costs and timelines to distribution, rights, funding and more.
If you don’t see your question here, feel free to get in touch, we’re happy to help.
-
The cost of publishing varies significantly depending on the type of book, the services required, and how many copies you want to print.
Most projects sit somewhere between $10,000 and $30,000, though some simpler books can be done for less, and larger, more complex ones can go higher.
Once we know more about your goals, we’ll put together a clear, tailored proposal to help you make the best decision for your project and budget. -
Most projects take between 4 and 12 months from the initial manuscript to finished copies, depending on how ready your manuscript is and what services you need. If your manuscript is polished and you’re ready to go, things can move quickly. If we’re starting from an early draft or including illustrations, design rounds or indexers, it can take a little longer. We’ll always be upfront about the schedule.
-

We work with a small group of trusted printers in New Zealand, China and Singapore, and will recommend the best option based on your book’s specifications, timeline and budget.
For larger runs or complex illustrated books, our offshore printers offer exceptional quality and value. For shorter runs or fast turnaround, we often print here in New Zealand. -
Absolutely. You retain full copyright and control how your book is sold, shared and used.

We sure do! Many of our clients are publishing for the first time. We know how personal, exciting, and sometimes overwhelming it can feel to put your work out into the world. We’re here to guide you through every step and help you bring it to life with care and confidence.
-
Yes, absolutely. While many of our authors work with us for full project management, we’re more than happy to step in for just one part of the process, whether that’s editing, cover design, typesetting, or printing.
The only exception is marketing, publicity and distribution. We only offer these services for books we’ve produced in full (including editing, design and printing), and that are published under our imprint. This is how we maintain the quality and reputation of the books we represent.
-
Yes. While we’re proudly based in Aotearoa, we regularly work with authors across Australia and further abroad. As long as you’re comfortable working via email and Zoom, location is no barrier. Yes, we do. Some of our most meaningful work has been personal projects: legacy books, memoirs, photo collections, family cookbooks, or private histories printed in small quantities. If the story matters to you, it matters to us. We’ll help you produce something beautiful, even if it’s just 5 copies for your family.
-
Unfortunately, this is becoming more common. If something doesn’t feel right, we’re happy to take a look and let you know what’s standard and what’s not. While we can’t fix every situation, we can offer honest advice, a second opinion, and help you figure out the best way forward if you’re feeling stuck.
The NZ Society of Authors (PEN NZ Inc) is also a great source of support. They regularly warn writers about predatory publishing practices and scams, and their website has excellent resources for spotting red flags and knowing your rights as an author.
-
Yes. While most of our books are printed, we also produce high-quality eBooks in-house, and can connect you with trusted partners for audiobook production if it’s a good fit for your project. We’ll guide you on which formats make the most sense based on your goals, audience and budget.
-
Yes, many authors look into funding to support their publishing costs. There are a range of grants and funding opportunities available in Aotearoa, depending on your book’s subject matter, audience, and purpose. We’re happy to point you in the right direction and help with supporting documents or quotes if needed.
